9/28/2023 0 Comments Company of heroes 3 surveyUS is about triangle shaped buildings and tents and green, wher is about trapezoid concrete and grey. Too much “toy soldiers” feeling which is less apparent in 1 & 2.ġ has superb color pallete and geometry / shape language for the factions, to the point you can easily recognize ur squads without UI (volks vs pgren for example). The overall art direction feels too Civ and less so Company of Heroes to me. I can only hope they revisit the models and make those fine detail tweaks. It's an exceptionally difficult thing to get right because it requires a lot of fine tuning and care to correctly model those small little details but it makes a world of difference. It's not the colors that are causing the problem, but the shadows and accessories. You have to make things pop, you have to sell the idea of depth. As if you picked up a toy and looked inside. The turret lacks shadow, there's no mystery or depth. The Axe appears to be melding into the tank as if it's colored plastic part of a toy, the hatches on the front seem recessed which makes them feel like they don't actually open (This appears to be a common problem across all vehicles), they're just visual flair on a toy. Looking at the CoH3 Hellcat and you see the problem immediately when comparing the same factors. It has sectors and attachments and sells the idea of being a real tank. It's beautifully crafted to evoke the feeling that this isn't a large hunk of plastic. The turret interior is drenched in shadow to lend mystery and depth to what's inside. It has some polish that the CoH3 vehicles don't have but nothing really stands out on the vehicle and you can feel it, I actually prefer the CoH3 Sherman since it has better depth in a lot of places, the major weakness of the coh3 sherman are the hatches that are recessed and look fake.Ĭompared to the CoH1 Hellcat you have those beautiful side axes that give off great depth, the axle skirts that feel like a specially molded piece of armor, the hook rings in the back, the ammo pouches, the rivets. I actually don't feel that strongly about the CoH1 Sherman. To quickly break down the Sherman and the Hellcat. Right now they just feel unfinished and as said before "plastic" and that's just from being too uniform and clean with nothing to really sell the effect that it's real and not just a toy. If you added some dings and cuts into those vehicles, make the accessories pop more to give it depth, and improved the shadow effect these models would look fantastic. Funnily enough Dark Souls: Prepare to Die and Dark Souls: Remastered had this same problem where metal armors lacked the scuffs and cuts and scratches that really sold the idea that it's metal and not plastic when they went from original to remaster. I would really like to see some fine detail added to the models in coh3.
